Woof! It’s your dog calling.

Moxie, the first smartphone for dogs, achieves crowdfunding success

Crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo have dramatically changed how innovative startups get funded, and give a voice to some of the best ideas that would have never seen the light of day. Dr. Tony Beizaee and Evan Jafa, co-founders of a startup called Moxie, achieved crowdfunding success recently, exceeding their goal with time still left on the clock. Moxie, a first-ever smartphone for dogs, was inspired by Dr. Tony’s own love for his canine friend Max.

“Our dogs are our best friends,” said Dr. Beizaee. “They miss us when we’re gone, and being alone all day does cause them some stress. Moxie allows your beloved pet to hear your voice any time, and the built-in camera even lets you see what mischief they are up to, and post their latest adventures to your social media pages.”

The smartphone offers features that should appeal to any pet owner. Its patented “call to bark” technology lets your dog actually make a two-way phone call to your mobile phone. When you pick up the call, not only can your pet hear your reassuring voice, you can also see what they are doing in real time. The device includes an image-stabilized, fixed focus HD camera, as well as a software app for social media uploads.

Consumer spending on pets and pet supplies has been steadily growing over the past several years, is expected to reach nearly $100 billion by the end of the decade. Spending, according to reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, remained steady even during the recession years of 2007-2009. The steady spending has solid reasoning behind it. Several studies have shown that pet ownership has a positive impact on human health, with one report concluding that benefits include lower stress, better cardiovascular health, reduced allergic sensitivities and less hypertension.

With health benefits like that, it’s no wonder pet owners have been looking for more ways to stay in touch with their pets while they’re away. According to Dr. Beizaee, “Moxie was developed to ensure peace of mind for all dog owners when they are unable to be physically present before their pet. Most importantly, our device will allow you to stay closer to your furry friend whenever you wish to be through multiple live video calls throughout the day. This way, you don’t have to miss out on the fun antics of your dogs and you will also be able to keep watch on your pet while sitting in office.”

Beizaee and Jafa’s associated venture firm, IOC Ventures, focuses on supporting the earliest stage companies in the Orange County, California area. Jafa is also founder of InnovateOC, an Orange County-based startup incubator. IOC Ventures works with founders in its portfolio, giving them resources and the deep expertise of its founders, partners, and entrepreneurs-in-residence.

“Moxie is all about celebrating the unconditional love between a dog owner and his best friend and is just the thing that every pet owner has been waiting for. We are sure you will love its unique approach and elegant design.”

The Kickstarter crowdfunding round will run through June 23.
